HAVANA 2015 ~ April 21-24

maninchairLeelanau Community Cultural Center is happy to present the opening of a photography exhibit – HAVANA 2015.   Four photographers from Northern Michigan recently travelled to Cuba – a country poised for change. They photographed strangers met in chance encounters on the streets of Havana and in the lush Cuban countryside. This exhibit will take place at the Old Art Building in Leland with an opening Reception on Thursday, April 21 from 6 – 8:30 PM.  At 7 pm the artistswill share their stories and share the excitement of their journey.  The HAVANA 2015 Exhibit will Continue on Friday, April 22 through Sunday April 24 from 10 am – 4 pm.

Last October, four photographers, Kathy Silbernagel, Kathie Carpenter, Emmy Holman and Babs Young from the Traverse City and Suttons Bay area traveled to Cuba. They photographed strangers met in their encounters while also doing street photography of Havana and the countryside.market

“We had this preconceived notion about Cuba with their cigars and bright colors but we didn’t go as tourists. We went as street photographers and we were talking with the locals. It was a unique experience,” Silbernagel said.

“I think the thing for me was I had those preconceived notions which were all dispelled once I sat down and talked with people. The Cuban people where joyful, and hospitable. You could go up and talk to them and they’d invite you into their house for coffee,” she said.

While the four photographers went together, they didn’t always travel or photograph together. They would split up in the morning and go their own ways and meet up mid-day to look at each other’s work. vwSome of the photographers focused strictly on street photography, while others focused on landscapes.

“I’ve always enjoyed photographing Northern Michigan and tended to not put people in my photographs. I wait for the people to leave to take my picture and I am in love with the photos I took in Cuba. I am over the top with them,” said Babs Young.

The group encountered all sorts of people and situations. “Another group we visited were transvestite prostitutes and that was really fun,” Silbernagel said.“They called themselves the lady boys and we went to one of their apartments to photograph them. They are vivacious and animated, and even invited us to go out to a show with them afterwards.”

The photos the group took not only capture the culture and people, but help break down stereotypes and some preconceived notions people outside of Cuba may think of.

“If you look in the faces of the people we photographed, you’ll see the joy and the openness of the people. I expected the people to be a little less open themselves and it’s exactly the opposite,” Silbernagel said.

One of Irish traditional music’s leading exponents, Téada is driven by a fascination for the timeless, expressive force of music inherited from previous generations of musicians.

An Irish band with a truly worldwide reach, Téada has appeared as a frequent headliner at major music festivals throughout the US, Canada, Mexico, Europe, Africa, Israel and Australia. Highlights include a 30,000-capacity stadium concert in Brittany, along with performances at Penang World Music Festival in Malaysia, Edmonton Folk Festival in Canada, Harare International Festival of the Arts in Zimbabwe, and Campeche International Festival in Mexico. The group also received an invitation from the Irish Embassy in Rome during 2008 to perform at a commemorative event marking the 400th anniversary of the landmark event in Irish history known as “The Flight of the Earls.”

Winner of ‘Best Young Irish Traditional Act’ at Ireland’s Music Awards, Téada released a long-awaited fourth album – Ceol & Cuimhne / Music & Memory in 2010 on the Gael Linn label, described by The Irish Echo’s Earle Hitchner as “the best album of Irish instrumental music I’ve heard so far this year “. 2011 sees Téada mark its’ 10th anniversary with a busy season of touring and other special projects.

Founded by Sligo fiddler Oisín Mac Diarmada, Téada first came together in 2001 to make an appearance on the innovative Irish television series ‘Flosc’. With engaging textural arrangements, Téada, meaning “strings” in the Irish language revels in the vibrant traditional music of Ireland. Deftly playing up its structural intricacies while preserving the contagious energy inherent in the repertoire, the group strives to capture a sense of the rawness and individuality of the solo artist, within a modern group context.

The reAwakening Tour

Inspired by the remarkable artistic flourishing of the Irish at home and abroad in the 100-year period from 1916 onwards, reAwakening sets historic musical and song material beginning from the early 20th century.

A traditional band with a truly worldwide reach, Téada has appeared as a frequent headliner at major music festivals throughout the US, Canada, Mexico, Europe, Africa, Russia, the Middle East, and Australia. Highlights include a 30,000-capacity stadium concert in Brittany, along with performances at Penang World Music Festival in Malaysia, Edmonton Folk Festival in Canada, Harare International Festival of the Arts in Zimbabwe, and an extensive 7-week tour of Japan and Taiwan in 2014 playing to audiences of 40,000 people. The band recently received a Yeats 2015 WDC Funding Award for a show production celebrating the Sligo-inspired poetry of W.B. Yeats. Téada’s latest addition to the line-up is legendary West Kerry singer and accordionist Séamus Begley, winner of 2013 TG4 Traditional Singer of the Year.

January 6th~Wondery Podcast Network~Nationwide Debut of Hollywood & Crime

$

hc-300Leland film producers Jim Carpenter and Rebecca (Becky) Reynolds have a new true crime audio series called Hollywood and Crime debuting nationwide on January 6th on the Wondery Podcast Network. That’s right – audio series!  It’s a true crime docu-drama that you listen to on your iPad, iPhone, online, or on your Bluetooth device.

As Carpenter says, “It’s like an old-fashion once-a-week radio serial, except you can listen to it almost anywhere nowadays – on headsets while you exercise or ‘live’ in your home or car.”

“And like old-fashion radio, we recreate the scenes using professional Screen Actors Guild actors to play all the parts – detectives, witnesses, suspects, etc.,” Reynolds continues. “We add period specific sound effects and create foley to completely immerse the listeners into the world of 1940 true crime. It’s an exciting process.”

All of the material used in the series is based on rigorous research, including newspapers, police files, autopsy and coroners’ reports and other primary and secondary source material. Fans of true crime will appreciate this kind of attention to detail.

The first 12-part series is called The Black Dahlia Serial Killers. It takes place in 1940s Los Angeles during Hollywood’s Golden Era. You may know about the Black Dahlia, one of the most infamous unsolved cases of all times. But what you probably don’t know is that during this same time period, over a dozen other women were brutally mutilated and murdered. Carpenter and Reynolds’ series investigates these new cases. They ask the question: Were these crimes the work of a serial killer…or a series of lone wolves or copy cat killers?

Tune into Jim and Becky’s new series as host Tracy Pattin investigates these shocking cases, uncovers new evidence, and immerses listeners in both the glamour and underbelly of 20th century Hollywood. You can find Hollywood and Crime at wondery.com, on iTunes, stitcher.comor anywhere you listen to podcasts.
