PURCHASE TICKETS

The Leelanau Community Cultural Center and 8180 Films are proud to present the Michigan Film Premiere of BEYOND GLORY.  Two screenings of the film will take place at the Old Art Building on Friday, November 6 at 6:30 pm & Saturday, November 7 at 1 pm.  Tickets for the film are $15 adults / $5 Students and are available at mynorthtickets.com or by calling 231-256-2131.  Stephen Lang and book author Larry Smith will be in Leland for the event and participate in a Q&A following each screening.

StephenLangBeyondGlory2BEYOND GLORY is a feature length documentary, produced by local filmmakers Ross Satterwhite, Rebecca Reynolds and Jim Carpenter (8180 Films), and tells the story of award-winning actor Stephen Lang’s yearlong journey of the evolution, process, and response to his award-winning, one-man play “Beyond Glory.” In the film, Lang portrays eight men who received the highest U.S. military accolade, the Congressional Medal of Honor.  Using first person accounts, Lang embodies each man, as he tells their stories with power, compassion, and a note of healing humor.  From War II, Korea, and Viet Nam, the men represent a racially mixed cross-section of America – both urban and rural – from California to New Jersey, from Arkansas to Montana, from Texas to Hawaii.BG2

Starting with Lang’s interactions with frontline troops in Afghanistan and the Persian Gulf, BEYOND GLORY follows Lang as he performs in the war zone, in theatres across the Heartland and at the Flea Theater in New York City.  Combining the intimacy of live performance with visual effects only available in the cinematic realm, the film gives the audience the experience of watching a unique, multi-layered theatrical event from the best seat in the house.

BG1Stephen Lang is an award-winning actor known for his work on TV, film and stage. His many films include LASTEXIT TO BROOKLYN, TOMBSTONE, GODS AND GENERALS, GETTYSBURG, PUBLIC ENEMIES, WHITE IRISH DRINKERS, CONAN THE BARBARIAN, CHRISTINA, and THE GIRL ON THE TRAIN. He will also be reprising his role as Colonel Miles Quaritch from James Cameron’s AVATAR in the three upcoming sequels. He received the NEA Chairman’s Medal for Distinguished Service for bringing BEYOND GLORY to American troops around the globe, as well as the Bob Hope Award from the Congressional Medal of Honor Society for his portrayal of American fighting men.bookcover

The play was written by Lang and is based on the book “Beyond Glory:  Medal of Honor Heroes in their own Words” by Larry Smith.  This New York Times best-selling account of battlefield courage celebrates the larger-than-life sacrifices of those awarded the nation’s highest honor for valor in combat. Exclusive interviews with these twenty-four men―firsthand accounts of battlefield sacrifice from the greatest generation to Viet Nam, along with before-and-after stories―form the core of this classic work. A book signing with Smith is scheduled at the Leland Township Public Library on Saturday morning, November 7, at 10:00 am.
This Old Art Building event, just days before Veterans Day on November 11, will be a fitting tribute to veterans of all ages. It is made possible with the generous support of the Herrington-Fitch Family Foundation, Patricia Zigarmi, the Edmund F. & Virginia B. Ball Foundation, The Riverside Inn, Tampico, Cris & Kathy Telgard and the Leelanau Community Cultural Center.

Some stories should never be forgotten.

One of Irish traditional music’s leading exponents, Téada is driven by a fascination for the timeless, expressive force of music inherited from previous generations of musicians.

An Irish band with a truly worldwide reach, Téada has appeared as a frequent headliner at major music festivals throughout the US, Canada, Mexico, Europe, Africa, Israel and Australia. Highlights include a 30,000-capacity stadium concert in Brittany, along with performances at Penang World Music Festival in Malaysia, Edmonton Folk Festival in Canada, Harare International Festival of the Arts in Zimbabwe, and Campeche International Festival in Mexico. The group also received an invitation from the Irish Embassy in Rome during 2008 to perform at a commemorative event marking the 400th anniversary of the landmark event in Irish history known as “The Flight of the Earls.”

Winner of ‘Best Young Irish Traditional Act’ at Ireland’s Music Awards, Téada released a long-awaited fourth album – Ceol & Cuimhne / Music & Memory in 2010 on the Gael Linn label, described by The Irish Echo’s Earle Hitchner as “the best album of Irish instrumental music I’ve heard so far this year “. 2011 sees Téada mark its’ 10th anniversary with a busy season of touring and other special projects.

Founded by Sligo fiddler Oisín Mac Diarmada, Téada first came together in 2001 to make an appearance on the innovative Irish television series ‘Flosc’. With engaging textural arrangements, Téada, meaning “strings” in the Irish language revels in the vibrant traditional music of Ireland. Deftly playing up its structural intricacies while preserving the contagious energy inherent in the repertoire, the group strives to capture a sense of the rawness and individuality of the solo artist, within a modern group context.

The reAwakening Tour

Inspired by the remarkable artistic flourishing of the Irish at home and abroad in the 100-year period from 1916 onwards, reAwakening sets historic musical and song material beginning from the early 20th century.

A traditional band with a truly worldwide reach, Téada has appeared as a frequent headliner at major music festivals throughout the US, Canada, Mexico, Europe, Africa, Russia, the Middle East, and Australia. Highlights include a 30,000-capacity stadium concert in Brittany, along with performances at Penang World Music Festival in Malaysia, Edmonton Folk Festival in Canada, Harare International Festival of the Arts in Zimbabwe, and an extensive 7-week tour of Japan and Taiwan in 2014 playing to audiences of 40,000 people. The band recently received a Yeats 2015 WDC Funding Award for a show production celebrating the Sligo-inspired poetry of W.B. Yeats. Téada’s latest addition to the line-up is legendary West Kerry singer and accordionist Séamus Begley, winner of 2013 TG4 Traditional Singer of the Year.
